Why sailors choose the TP52
The TP52 is a box rule, not a single design: owners commission their own boat within fixed dimensions and race it level, boat for boat, without handicaps. They choose it because it is seen as the top tier of monohull grand prix racing, with very close competition and a circuit (the 52 Super Series) that the owners themselves steer. It is a high-budget arena; in the early years sponsors paid large sums just to brand a mainsail.
- Real-time racing with no handicap: first boat home wins
- Box rule lets designers keep developing within fixed limits
- Seen as the top level of monohull grand prix racing
- Rule changes have aimed at fewer crew and sails to contain costs
- Owner-run circuit in good Mediterranean and Atlantic venues
- High-budget programmes

What sailors and testers say · in our words, from the linked pages
Owners tired of IMS handicaps adopted the TP52 for line-honours racing; rule tweaks made boats quicker while trimming crew and sails to hold costs.
