Why sailors choose the X-35

The X-35 is X-Yachts' 35-foot one-design, where closed class rules mean results come down to crew work, and it also races under handicap. Testers liked its light-air pace, crisp steering and many upwind adjustments, though it is quite tender and subtle to sail well. The interior is basic for its size.

  • Strict one-design class with large fleets in Europe
  • Quick in light air with crisp, light steering
  • Lots of rig and sail controls to tune upwind
  • Can also race IRC and other handicap systems
  • Fairly tender; subtle to sail at its best
  • Cramped galley and nav station, little stowage

What sailors and testers say · in our words, from the linked pages

  • Light and sensitive on the helm and nimble upwind, but tender and subtle; crews should log settings to learn her; the interior is weakest.

Yachting World test by Matthew Sheahan · Yachting World, 2006

  • It accelerated well and made almost six knots upwind in five knots of wind, with frictionless steering; the symmetric kite felt dated.
